Eucalyptus Oil
NOT a cooking oil — a medicinal essential oil. 1,8-cineole clears airways and relieves muscle pain.
TLDR — What You Need to Know
- Eucalyptus oil is an essential oil — it is NOT for cooking or eating. Ingesting it causes toxicity.
- Active compound: 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) — 70-85% of eucalyptus oil — is a proven bronchodilator and mucolytic (mucus thinner)
- Steam inhalation is the primary use — clinically supported for nasal congestion, sinusitis, and bronchitis
- Topical use: diluted 2-5% in carrier oil for muscle pain, joint pain, and headache — proven counter-irritant
- Safe for inhalation — not safe for ingestion. Even 2-5ml can cause convulsions in children.
- Antimicrobial activity: effective against E. coli, S. aureus, and several respiratory pathogens in lab studies
1,8-Cineole — The Active Compound
1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) is the primary compound:
- Bronchodilator: relaxes smooth muscle in airways — widens bronchi, making breathing easier
- Mucolytic: thins and loosens mucus in airways — facilitating clearance
- Anti-inflammatory: reduces inflammatory cytokines in bronchial tissue
- Antimicrobial: disrupts bacterial cell membranes
These effects are supported by multiple clinical trials for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sinusitis, and acute bronchitis.
Eucalyptus Oil — Uses and Evidence
| Use | Method | Evidence Level | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nasal congestion | Steam inhalation (3-5 drops in hot water) | Strong | Well-documented bronchodilator effect |
| Sinusitis | Inhalation or topical to chest | Moderate | Reduces sinus congestion in several RCTs |
| Muscle pain | Topical (diluted 2-5% in carrier oil) | Moderate | Counter-irritant and mild analgesic |
| Headache | Topical on temples (very diluted, 1-2%) | Moderate | Menthol and cineole combination effective |
| Oral health | Mouthwash formulations | Moderate | Antimicrobial against dental bacteria |
| Bug repellent | Topical (diluted) | Moderate | Active against mosquitoes |
Eucalyptus oil has strong evidence for respiratory use (inhalation) and moderate evidence for topical pain relief and antimicrobial applications. It is not for internal consumption.
How to Use Safely
Steam inhalation: Add 3-5 drops to a bowl of very hot (not boiling) water. Cover head with a towel, face 30cm above bowl. Inhale for 5-10 minutes. Keep eyes closed throughout.
Topical: ALWAYS dilute in a carrier oil (coconut or sesame). 2-5 drops per 10ml carrier oil. Never apply undiluted — causes skin irritation and burns. Patch test first.
NEVER ingest: Eucalyptus oil ingestion is toxic. 2-5ml can cause convulsions, respiratory depression, and death in children. Keep away from children. Do not use near infants.
What Not to Do
- Do not ingest
- Do not apply undiluted to skin
- Do not use near infants or children under 2 (may cause breathing reflex suppression)
- Do not use near eyes
- Do not use in a diffuser around cats (toxic to cats)

Frequently Asked Questions
Q Can I drink eucalyptus oil tea?
Can I drink eucalyptus oil tea?
No — eucalyptus essential oil is toxic when ingested. Eucalyptus leaf tea is a separate product and is safe in normal amounts — it is the concentrated essential oil that is toxic, not the dried leaf infusion. Do not add eucalyptus essential oil to water or food.
Q Is eucalyptus oil safe for babies?
Is eucalyptus oil safe for babies?
No — eucalyptus oil (and menthol-containing products) should not be used near infants under 2 years. The 1,8-cineole can suppress the breathing reflex in very young children. For infant congestion, use saline drops and a humidifier instead.
Q How many drops for steam inhalation?
How many drops for steam inhalation?
3-5 drops in a large bowl of hot water. More does not provide additional benefit and can irritate airways. Keep eyes closed during inhalation. Do not lean too close to very hot water — steam burns are possible.
Q Can I add eucalyptus oil to my diffuser?
Can I add eucalyptus oil to my diffuser?
Yes for adults — 3-5 drops in a water diffuser is safe and effective for ambient air. Do not use in rooms with infants, young children, or cats. Limit diffusion sessions to 30-60 minutes.
