Navara Rice — Key Facts

  • Navara is the only rice variety used in traditional Ayurvedic Panchakarma therapy — specifically in Navara Kizhi (rice bundle massage)
  • Unique among all rice varieties globally: formally recognised as a medicinal rice with documented therapeutic applications in Ayurvedic texts
  • Red-brown bran colour indicates the presence of anthocyanins and oryzanol antioxidants not found in white rice
  • Lower GI than polished white rice — the intact bran slows starch digestion
  • Cultivated primarily in Kuttanad (the Venice of the East) and Palakkad regions of Kerala
  • A GI (Geographical Indication) tagged product — authentic Navara can only come from Kerala
  • Traditional Navara Kanji (rice gruel) is prescribed for convalescence, post-fever recovery, and post-surgery nutrition in Kerala

What Is Navara Rice?

Navara (Oryza sativa var. Navara) is a short-grain heritage rice variety unique to Kerala. It is called Njavara in the classical Ayurvedic literature, from which the modern name Navara derives. It is the only rice variety in the world that is specifically documented in Ayurvedic pharmacopoeias as a medicinal substance.

The grain is small, slightly oval, and distinctively red-brown in colour due to its pigmented bran. The plant is a short-duration variety (60–90 days from transplanting to harvest), making it one of the faster-maturing rice varieties. It produces relatively low yield compared to modern hybrid rice varieties — which is one reason it became rare as commercial farming prioritised yield.

Geographical Indication Status

Navara rice received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Government of India — meaning that only rice grown in specific regions of Kerala can legally be sold as Navara rice. The primary cultivation zones are:

  • Kuttanad region (Alappuzha and Kottayam districts) — the famous below-sea-level rice growing belt of Kerala
  • Palakkad — Kerala’s rice bowl
  • Thrissur and parts of central Kerala

GI protection was granted to preserve authentic Navara from adulteration and to support the farmers who grow this low-yield, labour-intensive heritage variety.

Navara Kizhi (also called Njavarakizhi or Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda in Sanskrit) is a distinctive Panchakarma (Ayurvedic therapeutic) procedure that uses cooked Navara rice as its primary material:

The procedure:

  1. Navara rice is cooked in a decoction of milk and Sida cordifolia (Bala, a medicinal herb) until it forms a thick, sticky mass
  2. The cooked rice is divided into cloth bundles (kizhi = bundle in Malayalam) tied tightly
  3. Two therapists simultaneously dip the bundles alternately into the hot milk decoction and massage the patient’s body in rhythmic strokes
  4. The procedure lasts 45–60 minutes, followed by an oil bath

Therapeutic applications in Ayurvedic tradition:

  • Neuromuscular diseases — particularly conditions involving muscle wasting, weakness, and paralysis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis and painful joint conditions
  • Recovery from stroke — to restore movement and sensation
  • General debility and convalescence
  • Post-sports injury rehabilitation in traditional practice

Why specifically Navara? Ayurvedic texts specify that Shashtika Shali (the 60-day rice, i.e., Navara) must be used — not any other rice. The explanation in Ayurvedic pharmacology is that Navara’s unique composition (it is classified as Madhura/sweet, Sheeta/cooling, and having specific dosha-balancing properties) makes it uniquely suitable. Modern research suggests Navara’s higher content of polyphenols and tricin (a flavone) may contribute to its anti-inflammatory effects when applied topically.

Classical Textual References

Navara (Shashtika Shali) is mentioned in:

  • Charaka Samhita — classified as a superior grain (Shali dhanya) with therapeutic properties
  • Ashtanga Hridayam of Vagbhata — specific instructions for Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda
  • Sushruta Samhita — Njavara listed among grains with specific medicinal properties

This documentation separates Navara from other heritage rices — it is not just nutritionally valuable but specifically integrated into a therapeutic system with millennia of clinical use.

Nutritional Highlights

Higher Protein Than White Rice

Navara rice provides approximately 8–9g protein per 100g — higher than common white rice (6.8g). The protein quality is typical of rice — relatively low in lysine — but the quantity advantage is meaningful.

Antioxidant Profile

Tricin: A methoxylated flavone uniquely concentrated in rice bran. Navara’s red bran has higher tricin content than standard white or brown rice. Tricin has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activity in laboratory studies.

Gamma-oryzanol: Present in rice bran oil; Navara’s intact bran retains this compound. Gamma-oryzanol has been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol, reduce menopausal symptoms, and act as an antioxidant.

Anthocyanins: The red colour of Navara bran comes partly from anthocyanins — the same antioxidants found in blueberries and red wine. These are potent free-radical scavengers.

Lower GI Than White Rice

Unpolished Navara has a lower glycaemic index than polished white rice because the intact bran slows starch digestion. While Navara is not a low-GI grain (it is still a rice variety), its GI is in the range of 55–65, comparable to parboiled rice, which is notably better than the 72 of standard polished white rice.

Traditional Growing Practice

Navara is a traditional short-duration variety that was grown as a third (late) crop in Kerala’s rice calendar, harvested in the cool months of December–January. The cool weather at harvest is considered by some farmers to enhance the grain’s medicinal qualities — a claim that has not been formally tested but aligns with observations that antioxidant content in crops can be affected by temperature at maturation.

Traditional cultivation of Navara uses minimal external inputs — it was grown without synthetic fertilisers in the traditional practice, which aligns with organic cultivation. The low yield (much lower than hybrid varieties) means farmers need to be paid a premium price for the grain to sustain cultivation — the GI tag and medicinal rice premium support this.

Organic Availability

Navara rice is available as organically certified grain from select Kerala farms. The organic certification ensures freedom from synthetic pesticides and fertilisers that could contaminate the bran (which, when intact, is the nutritionally and medicinally valuable part of the grain). Buying certified organic unpolished Navara is the most nutritionally complete form.

How to Use Navara Rice

Navara Kanji is a traditional convalescent food prescribed in Kerala homes and Ayurvedic hospitals. It is an easily digestible, nourishing gruel given to patients recovering from fever, surgery, or serious illness:

  • Ingredients: 1/4 cup Navara rice, 2 cups water, 1/2 cup thin coconut milk (or plain milk), salt
  • Method: Wash rice. Cook with water in a heavy pan until very soft and breaking down (20–25 minutes, uncovered). Add coconut milk and salt. Cook 5 more minutes until creamy.
  • Serve: Warm. Add a small amount of ghee.

Why kanji works for convalescence: The broken-down starch is highly digestible. The amino acids from rice protein are quickly absorbed. The fat from coconut milk provides energy without burdening digestion. The gruel format ensures adequate hydration.

As a Daily Rice

Navara can be cooked and eaten as regular rice — use 1:2 water ratio, pressure cook or stovetop. The cooked grain is slightly more firm than soft polished white rice, with a characteristic mild nutty aroma. Its red-brown colour fades partially during cooking, leaving a cream-pink tinted rice.

Storage

Unpolished Navara rice contains intact bran with fat and antioxidants. The bran fat can go rancid in warm, humid conditions. Store in an airtight container, cool and dry. Refrigerate in summer months. Use within 6–9 months of purchase for best nutrition and flavour.

Q

What makes Navara rice different from other red rice varieties?

A

Navara is not just any red rice — it is a specific short-duration variety (60–90 day cycle) native to Kerala with a unique grain composition documented in Ayurvedic texts. Other red rices like Rajmudi (Karnataka) or Kerala Matta (Palakkad) are different varieties with different grain size, texture, and composition. Navara is specifically the rice used in Navara Kizhi therapy — no other rice variety is substituted in authentic practice. Its red-brown bran has higher tricin content than other red rice varieties tested.

Q

Can I eat Navara rice every day?

A

Yes — Navara can be eaten as your daily rice. It has better nutritional credentials than polished white rice: more protein, more fibre, lower GI, and antioxidants. Ayurvedic texts classify Shashtika Shali (Navara) as a sattvic, easily digestible grain appropriate for regular consumption. The main practical consideration is storage — the intact bran goes rancid faster than polished white rice, so buy in smaller quantities and store properly.

Q

What is Navara Kizhi and does it actually work?

A

Navara Kizhi (Njavarakizhi / Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda) is a Panchakarma procedure where bundles of cooked Navara rice in a milk-herb decoction are used to massage the body. It has been used for thousands of years primarily for neuromuscular conditions and rehabilitation. Clinical evidence: several studies from Kerala medical institutions have shown improvements in muscle strength, range of motion, and pain reduction in conditions like cerebral palsy, hemiplegia, and osteoarthritis. The active mechanisms are not fully elucidated but likely involve heat therapy, mechanical stimulation, and absorption of bioactive compounds through skin. It is a legitimate traditional therapy with supportive (though not yet large-scale RCT) clinical evidence.

Q

Where can I buy authentic Navara rice?

A

Authentic Navara rice (GI-tagged) can be purchased from: certified Kerala organic farms directly; speciality Ayurvedic product stores; select organic food retailers who source Kerala heritage grains. Look for the GI certification mark. Prices are significantly higher than commodity rice due to low yields and artisanal cultivation. Be wary of products simply labelled 'Navara' without GI certification or farm traceability — the name is sometimes misused for other red rice varieties.

Q

Is Navara rice good for diabetes?

A

Better than white rice. Unpolished Navara has a GI of approximately 55–65 compared to white rice at 72. The intact bran fibre (3.2g/100g) slows starch digestion. The antioxidant compounds may offer additional metabolic benefits. However, Navara is still a rice variety with significant starch content — it is not a low-GI food like millets. For diabetics who want to continue eating rice, Navara is a meaningfully better choice than polished white rice, but millets (foxtail, barnyard, kodo) are still superior for blood sugar management.
